Defeat of Houston school bond puts Dems, progressives in the same boat with today's Trump victors
One wonders what's really going on beneath the surface.

Reporting yesterday’s defeat of a $4.4 billion Houston school bond proposal, The Houston Chronicle today says it, “follows a vocal, monthslong grassroots opposition effort.”
That simply is not true.
Opposition to the Houston school bond program was solely the product of an organizing drive by the Houston teachers’ union and a fake grassroots community group headed by a recent full-time employee of the union.
The bond was badly needed to pay for crumbling school infrastructure throughout the district.
The teachers’ union in Houston is following a national union playbook of fierce opposition to all school reform programs that base teacher pay on job performance instead of years of service.
If there was any spontaneous support for the defeat distinct from the union effort, it came from Democratic elected officials in Houston.
The defeat of the bond program is a stunning abdication of community responsibility, putting those Democrats who helped do it in the very same rowboat with this morning’s happy Republicans -- enough to make one wonder what’s really at the heart of this terrible day.
Another perspective. Bill King ran for mayor of Houston a couple election cycles ago and is hardly a union hack. https://www.billkingblog.com/blog/houston-isd-bond-goes-down-in-historic-defeat?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2k_MQFwhOzk79pH7qO7X2APcxzY8IFw0IX6KA6U04mKEpTMn8n2v3pp5g_aem_zWOk_UViwYZgQkodbRTgdQ
This isn’t astroturf - this is democracy.
